What we do..
A team from Abhiyan reached Uttarakhand in Jul and thereafter in August 2013 to assess the situation and ongoing efforts post the cloud burst and the flood.
In July the team met Mr. Cyril Raphael from SBMA which is a local organization working actively in the region. SBMA is currently involved in supporting the victims by running relief camps and by providing food and other essential items. The team visited the affected areas of Uttarkashi town as well as Gangotri. SBMA has done a detailed family wise survey. Uttarkashi town has suffered damage heavily. The team also visited a settlement at Uttarkashi which had been silted upto 3-4'.
Another 7 member team left from Bhuj in Aug 2013 for Damage Assessment of flood/cloud burst areas of Thtyur (Tehri Garwal), Guptkasi (Rudrapryag), Joshimath (Chamoli) and Nand Pryag (Chamoli) at Uttrakhand. Based on the findings of the assessment, it has been decided to work at Uttrakhand under the umbrella of ODRC (Owner Driven Reconstruction Collaborative). ODRC is a network of civil society organizations, government representatives, and international institutions with experience in post-disaster reconstruction (to know more about ODRC please visit http://odrcollaborative.net). Abhiyan will be responsible for setting up Setu’s as centres facilitating knowledge resources as required in the clusters. However, all our efforst will be in collaboration with the local organizations in the region (SBMA and Parmarth Niketan).
Work has already started towards rehabilitation in Parodi village of Thtyur block. We have formed village committee at Parodi to implement the project. We will facilitate them with socio-technical inputs, expert inputs and funds. Bank account will be opened shortly in the name of Village Committee. At present we have started entry point activities (1) Making of road till village so we can reach village with material and (2) Renovation of village Temple : committee decided to renovate village temple and chauk for coming Diwali festival. Making of road is almost completed.
